Photo A Day: Amsterdam’s Silhouette

Amsterdam's Silhouette

"Amsterdam's Silhouette" (2011)

It was my first day in Amsterdam, but it was supposed to have been my second. I stupidly mixed up my flights the day before and was forced to reschedule my travel over to Europe. Embarrassed and disappointed, I went home only to return to the airport the next day to really start my trip. But it had been hours (which really only felt like minutes) since I landed and Kristen and I were on a guided boat trips around the canal system throughout the city.

We had already walked the streets quite a bit, so there weren’t many things that the tour showed us that we hadn’t seen and photographed at a different angle. In general, this has been my experience with most guided tours. It’s generally better if you strike out on your own and find things to see. But boat tours are the only exception in my book, since I have yet to learn how to walk on water. They almost always give you a different view of the city and they most definitely go places that you cannot.

Most of the way through the canal tour, we turned onto one of the main canals that runs through the city. The view above is what met us around that turn, and I couldn’t help but to take a photo through the glass windows of the boat.
