Photo A Day: Occupy Columbus

Occupy Cbus

"Occupy Cbus" (2011)

Today’s image was taken yesterday, at Day 1 of Occupy Columbus. Protesters from the group assembled on the sidewalk outside of the State House downtown to air their grievances about current government. There were a wide variety of signs there that ranged from political to nonsensical — my favorite was “I have a watermelon.”

I’m not sure what I think of the whole Occupy Movement, but while I was there to photograph the event, I noticed the reflection of the state house in the skyscraper on the opposite side of Broad St. It was a great image, even without context. With the protestors and the reflection of a state building off of a corporate building, it’s just too interesting to walk away from.

For an interesting and hilarious take on the current Occupy Wall Street movement, check out what Jon Stewart and The Daily Show have to say.

Photo A Day: Columbus Skyline

Columbus Skyline

"Columbus Skyline" (2011)

This amazing view greets me daily on my way to work from Grandview.  I was on my way home late in the evening last winter, on the day where the moon was closest to the Earth. Through my rear view mirror, and felt compelled to stop to take a photo. The way the moon gracefully hangs over the city, combined with the rainbow effect that the building lights had, made the sight simply too beautiful to ignore.

There isn’t much of a story behind this one particular image, as much as there is a story on my love affair with Columbus. I was born and raised here. I’ve spent most of my adult life in Columbus, even though I’ve done short stents in other cities and traveled extensively. No matter where I am, it’s never as good as Columbus. The music, food, arts, education, culture, business and other communities here combine to make a magnificent city. Columbus is the Goldie Locks of American cities… for me, at least.

Wexner Center’s Off The Grid, 2011

Once again, we were covering the photography for The Wexner Center’s yearly event Off The Grid. And just like every year, it was a blast! We went to the pre-party this year, and couldn’t have been more pleased with the decision. Mershon Auditorium was filled with local restaurants, each with their own miniature appetizers to sample. My favorites are Due Amici and Barrio, but there were lots of other great ones! They also redid the performance area bar and made it way easier to move about. The visuals were stunning, as always. It may have been the best year yet, and they managed to raise over $60,000 for their educational programs! Success!!!

No time for blogging, all shooting!

Let’s start out with and apology from me to you. I haven’t been able to keep up on the blog like I’d wish because we’re so heavily booked. It’s a good problem to have, but I’m trying to work around the big Spring influx of sessions and fit in time to keep the website updated. But yeah, sorry guys. I promise to be better about it in the future!

Wonderland Floats

Wonderland Float at Franklin Park Conservatory

Friday night from 6-8, people gathered at the Franklin Park Conservatory to donate to Wonderland and make wishes that were set against the beautiful backdrop of the conservatory at night. It was gorgeous and touching, as hundreds wrote their wishes for Wonderland on their balloon, each lit up with a small LED light and anchored by books set aside for recycling. Here’s just one preview of our look at the event.

Course Details

This hands-on workshop was created to provide you with a well-rounded understanding of DSLR operation, lenses, image composition, and camera construction. Thanks to a small class size and seasoned instructor with years of professional photography experience, you’re guaranteed hands-on time with your camera. Over the course of the day we’ll cover five crucial topics, including:

Step #1. Opening the Aperture

We’ll be taking a look at different kinds of lenses and what each does for you, and your photos. You’ll learn how to get those dreamy out-of-focus shots, and the razor-sharp in-focus landscapes you’ve been trying to get.

Step #2. Controlling Shutter Speed

You’ll learn how to control time and motion with your camera body. We’ll be covering shutter speeds and all they help you accomplish in your visual message. We’ll also be showing you how to avoid the pitfalls of poorly chosen shutter speed.

Step #3. Working with ISO and White Balance

You’ll learn what these letters stand for, and why they are such an important part of taking beautiful photos. We’ll be covering how your white balance can make or break your image, and how you can tame it.

Step #4. Mastering Natural Lighting and Flash Photography

You’ll learn when and how to use the flash without rendering your subjects blind or ruining photos. You’ll also learn special techniques to make the flash work for you in all sorts of lighting conditions.

Step #5. Taking a Tour of Your Camera Settings

Do you suffer from acronym-itis when trying to navigate your camera settings? We’ll dispel all of the confusion by reviewing all of the typical settings found on DSLRs, and will examine your camera if you’re unable to find a particular feature. You’ll also learn how to best use these settings in concert with one another when working within ranged settings from bright daylight to nighttime photography.

2011 Internships are now available!

One Bite Wellness commercial studio photo

We’ve finally gotten through the beginning of the year, with all it’s bridal expos and meetings with new brides and grooms. We’ve also gotten rolling on the second volume of our book, “the hot 17.” So now that we’ve got a little more time, we’ve realized how much help we really need around the studio. We’ve decided that it’s time to bring on two new interns. If you’re interested in an internship at Photolosophys, please email Meghan with your information, interests, and resume. Our interns usually work 3-4 hours a week in our studio, and typically work their way up to assistants within a year or so.

A peek at a picturesque Columbus skyline.

Cbus Skyline

Saturday night, around 8:15, I was headed back into the studio to pack up equipment and get ready for the Ohio South Asian Bridal Expo the next day. As I hopped onto State Route 33 / I-670 East bound, and as I looked to my right, I saw an enormous moon hanging over the city skyline. Unfortunately, it took me about fifteen minutes or so to find the right position to take the photo from… at least one where I could reasonably get my car, walk to the right spot, set-up the tripod and remote shutter release, get the proper exposure, set the composition, and then finally snap a few frames. By the time I had gotten myself set, the moon had moved slightly higher and a little farther South, but it still looked beautiful. Especially with all of the lights reflecting off the water, I think it makes for a very romantic Winter view of Columbus. It’s was so pretty out that night, I almost forgot that the cold and wind made my hands numb… almost.
